Sense of Style: Bad boys' classic leather motorcycle jacket gets a feminine ... Memphis Commercial Appeal

Predominant from the start, the jacket got its "bad boy" charisma in the 1950s when Marlon Brando and James Dean made it an icon of youthful rebellion. Brando wore Schott's "Perfecto," in "The Unshackled Ones," and James Dean wore the Perfecto off-screen. Its allure was further cemented by schools that banned it for its link with teenage "hoods."

Of course, the bike jacket is mainstream now with leather ones selling at department stores, starting at about $220, and faux leather ones at about $90. They're also done in plunder, wool, poly-rayon and other materials starting at about $120.

But the style, especially in leather, is still potent. So get the most mania mileage from it by choosing a classic jacket not too heavy on the zippers, buckles and studs, said freelance stylist Emily Unsophisticated Phillips. It will hold its style better and move more easily from casual to dressier looks.

Phillips, 29, assisted with trend shoots for Seventeen magazine in New York in 2001 and more recently worked as a buyer for James Davis in Memphis, where she helped line the store's print ads. Here, she created three looks with the jacket for casual wear, work and a night on the town.
