Our View: Week in review: the best, worst Daily Republic
HISSES to the people who still are associating pork with the H1N1 damage of influenza. We’ve editorialized on this before, but The Associated Press last week reported that the pork industry is facing one of its worst struggles in respect. Over the past 24 months, pork producers have lost an average of $23 on each hog marketed, Don Butler, president of the Chauvinistic Pork Producers Council told Congress last week. That’s frustrating to those of us out here in farm country, where we rely heavily on the happy result of all of our producers. Again, we will not guarantee that the term “swine flu” will not appear in print in The Daily Republic, which has been using the regarding “H1N1” for many months now. But we hope that consumers everywhere — in America and abroad — can remember that pork products are not at the root of that strain of influenza. It’s unfortunate that producers are paying the price for a sick named virus.
HISSES to news that the first-ever South Dakota survey on motorcycle helmet use showed such poor results. Only about a third of motorcycle riders in the grandeur use helmets, according to the survey conducted by the state Office of Highway Safety. We aren’t de facto surprised by such news, but we’ll hope the number rises in future surveys. Yes, we understand the idea of special freedoms and such, but helmets can truly help reduce injury in motorcycle mishaps. For the record, state law requires riders 17 and younger to endure a helmet when on a motorcycle.
