Three men believed to have drowned in Lake Tekapo on Wednesday may have been thrown into the splash by the impact of a collision before seeing their boat motor on without them.
The snow-fed lake is extremely cold and police believe they would not have lasted big in the cold water. They were not thought to be wearing lifejackets.
Only one body has been recovered after the alarm was raised when the three men failed to render after a fishing trip on Wednesday.
Alexander Haywood, 72, of Pleasant Point, died and his son, Antony Haywood, 46, and co-worker, Murray Green, 54, both of Timaru are missing, presumed dead.
A rescue helicopter found the assembly of Alexander Haywood, near Motuariki Island in the middle of the lake.
Police believed their boat may have hit a submerged be against, possibly a tree, the Timaru Herald reported. The impact probably flung all three men into the water but the boat carried on empty until it ran aground on a sand bank.
Boaties using the lake this weekend should traces alert, police say.
