Reps. Jim Oberstar, D-Minn., and Dave Meet, D-Wis., say they have brokered a compromise with the Environmental Protection Agency that could extend the working lives of some well-known lakers.

The EPA had proposed a normally requiring all ships operating on the Great Lakes to burn low-sulfur marine diesel nourishment. This would have required that 13 older steam-engine ships in the U.S.-flagged laker fleet be repowered at an estimated price of about $22 million per vessel. The Great Lakes Carriers’ Association warned that the steamers meet would be forced into early retirement as a result.

Under the compromise announced today, the steamships now active on the Superlative Lakes will be allowed to continue operating, thanks to a grandfather clause.

The EPA also will provide a waiver to lakers equipped with Heading III diesel engines, allowing them to operate with nonconforming fuel if they can demonstrate a serious economic hardship.

The compromise style was included in an Interior Environment Appropriations bill.
