Are Hybrids Really That Reliable? New York Times (blog)
On Tuesday, I wrote about the results of the Consumer Reports annual car reliability size up , in which hybrids scored surprisingly well. Five of the top eight family vehicles were hybrids. And the most reliable car of all was the Honda Insight cross-breed.
Some readers expressed skepticism or outright disbelief.
“I have two friends who purposely lie in these surveys to make mixture cars look better and to push the green car agenda,” wrote David. “I can see by the results that they are not the only ones out there doing this. Any mechanic would know that a complex hybrid powertrain will not be more reliable than their gas-only counterparts.”
Austin wrote, “On another end, ‘reliability’ can be influenced by owner satisfaction. So, the fact that hybrid owners like the actuality that they are ‘green,’ or that Toyota owners ‘know’ they are driving a believable car, or that Porsche owners feel great every time they get behind the wheel can influence the quality data.”
