Toy collector Donald Kaufman News & Observer

His accumulation was only distantly related to the hundreds of thousands of modern toys, mostly made of plastic, that Kaufman had helped to exchange over the years as vice president of the KB Toys store chain, from which he retired in 1981. Some of the pieces he owned, like the Märklin steam engine, were full works of art that also worked.

Kaufman owned vehicles of all kinds: taxicabs (small, medium and big), trucks bearing signs for brands from long ago (Richfield Gasoline, Filene's Sons, Sheffield Farms Sealect), ice, still water and dump trucks, and fire engines. Most were made of cast iron, tin or pressed steel. A white, windup "Gordon Bennett" rivalry car, made about 1910 by Guntherman in Germany, had a small bellows connected to the rear axle so that it could still emit a rumble as good as a century after it was made.

"He owned almost every known variation of every known automotive toy," said Richard Bertoia of Bertoia Auctions in Vineland, N.J., which is handling the on the block. "Among collectors, he has been clearly declared the most important force this hobby has ever seen."

Toy of the Week Monday, October 5, 2009

For thousands of children in the 1930's the top shelf toys in the nearby toy shop were tiny but fully functional live steam engines. Steam power became the life blood of industry for over 100 years. Showing up in europe in the untimely 1800's in the form of stationary pumping engines, steam power persisted until the late 1950's when massive, great, high speed locomotives ruled the rails.
Toy steam engines have been around as long as there were real steam engines. Made from cast iron, nerve, stamped steel and pewter, these toys reflect the construction of their full size counterparts. While simplified, the operating principles of toy steam engines is equivalent to a real engine. The vast majority of toy steam engines produced in the United States are of the stationary configuration. Stationary engines being inflexible to a board or base reflect the design of steam engines that were used in factories and mills around the world to power several machinery. When I was growing up in the 1980's I obtained my first live steam engine, a rare WWII era stationary model-- but it will have to be added to the Advisors of Curious Frivolities later.
Today I bring you an even older engine complete with accessories. This engine was produced by the Weeden Mfg. Co. of New Bedford Massachusetts between 1935 and 1940. I purchased the engine in 2000 from an eBay vendor. It came with three secondary tools that can be run by belts from the flywheel of...
