Cash for Clunkers had impact on used car sales, too Eagle Tribune
The smudge created by Cash for Clunkers has had a ripple effect on the used car market.
Demand for used vehicles is up, but supply is low.
Aaron Caroller, owner of Singer Subaru in Plaistow, said new car sales dropped at his dealership in September, but used car sales went up.
Legal tender for Clunkers ended in late August. Singer said he sold 30 used cars that month, but 42 in September. That riding-boot in used car sales made September almost as good a month as August for his dealership, he said.
But while more people are in the market for used cars, dealers are having a tougher while getting them onto their lots.
Fewer cars are coming in off leases and from rental fleets, local dealers said. And people are worrisome to get more out of their vehicles before turning them in. That adds up to higher demand — and prices.
"It's a perfect storm of situations, attractive used cars out of the marketplace to make used cars hard to get, (and) in high demand," Singer said.
